Create Your Own Homemade Smoke Filter Using an Altoids Tin

Gather Your Materials

To get started, gather the following materials: an empty Altoids tin, activated carbon or charcoal pellets (which can be found at most pet stores), a small fan or computer fan, wire cutters, electrical tape, and a power source such as batteries or a USB cable.

Assemble Your Fume Extractor

Firstly, take the lid off the Altoids tin and set it aside. Next, use wire cutters to carefully remove any excess metal from inside the tin so that there is enough space for airflow. Then place a layer of activated carbon or charcoal pellets at the bottom of the tin – this will act as our filtering agent.

Now it’s time to attach our fan. If using a small fan with wires already attached, simply position it on top of the layer of activated carbon in such a way that it blows air downwards into the tin. Secure it in place by wrapping electrical tape around its edges to hold it firmly against the sides of the tin.

If you are using a computer fan without wires attached, strip about half an inch off both ends of two separate wires. Connect one end to each terminal on your fan motor – usually labeled positive (+) and negative (-). Once connected securely with electrical tape or soldering if preferred (be cautious when handling hot tools), position the fan on top of the activated carbon layer and secure it with electrical tape as mentioned before.

Your DIY fume extractor is now complete! To power it up, connect the wires from your fan to a power source such as batteries or a USB cable. Once turned on, the fan will draw air through the activated carbon, effectively filtering out smoke and odors. Place your homemade smoke filter near your work area for optimal results.
